Top 10 Moments of the 2016-17 Season So Far - #9

9. The Beast earns a thrilling season-opening overtime victory over the Wheeling Nailers.

The 2016-2017 Brampton Beast opened their season in style on October 15, 2016 by spoiling the home-opener festivities of one of their chief rivals, the Wheeling Nailers.

It was the dynamic duo of Luke Pither and David Vallorani — a tandem that has remained consistent through the first third of the season — that took center stage on the offensive front. They stunned the raucous home crowd into near silence just 4:26 into the first period by teaming up for a 2-on-0 breakaway goal. Pither placed a perfect pass on Vallorani’s blade and he beat the Wheeling goaltender Doug Carr with a low, hard shot.

The goal call of “Vallorani from Pither” has been a common refrain this year in arenas across the league.

Wheeling fought back with two tallies of their own to take a 2-1 lead: Josh Shalla scored the equalizer at 9:13 of the second and Darryl Lloyd struck at 1:35 of the final frame.

Luke Pither refused to let his team succumb to defeat on opening night. He delivered the game-tying goal at 9:59 of the third by beating Carr with a backhand deke on a breakaway to force overtime.

Pither then put the exclamation point on an outstanding night for him by scoring off of a wrist shot from near the top of the circle at 3:27 of overtime to win the game for his team.

Goaltender Andrew D’Agostini also shone in this contest by making 25 saves on 27 shots to earn the ‘W.’
