BRAMPTON, ONTARIO – The Brampton Beast, ECHL affiliate of the St. John’s IceCaps and Montreal Canadiens, announce today that rugged two-way forward and former member of the Toronto Maple Leafs David Broll has signed with the Beast for the upcoming 2016-17 ECHL season.
Broll, 23, hails from Mississauga, Ontario and has spent the majority of his professional career in the American Hockey League. The tough 6’2” left winger spent last season with the Syracuse Crunch, appearing in 60 contests, picking up two goals and six assists while racking up 112 penalty minutes.
Throughout his AHL career, he has appeared in 174 contests with the Crunch and the Toronto Marlies from 2011-12 through to 2015-16, scoring a total of five goals and 22 helpers, while collecting 371 penalty minutes.
A draft choice of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2011, Broll made his NHL debut during the 2013-14 season, appearing in five games and recording one assist and five penalty minutes.
He first joined the Otters for his rookie season in the OHL in 2009-10, proving his worth with nine goals and nine assists in 64 games played.
Broll first established himself as a player to be feared during his impressive junior career shared between the Erie Otters and the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League.
From 2009-10 to 2012-13, the 236-pound juggernaut appeared in 255 contests and scored 47 goals while recording 92 assists and 285 penalty minutes. He hit his stride during his final year of junior hockey in 2012-13. Serving as the assistant captain with the Greyhounds, Broll exploded for 17 goals and 37 assists for 54 points to go along with his gritty 77 penalty minutes.
He is no stranger to the ECHL, having suited up for the Orlando Solar Bears for 16 games in the 2014-15 season. His two goals and seven helpers was enough to earn him a place on that season’s ECHL All Star Game roster.
A self described “big, physical winger” Broll is currently attending training camp with the Montreal Canadiens but is excited at the opportunity that the Beast are able to provide.
“Brampton is right down the street from me being a Mississauga boy,” Broll said. “I know a couple of guys who played for Brampton and it’s a great local team and I thought it would be a great fit for me.”
Beast Head Coach Colin Chaulk believes Broll provides a unique style of play that will make him an asset for the upcoming season.
“David Broll is somebody that brings a lot of grit,” Chaulk said. “He plays heavy and is somebody that can protect the puck and be a real force at the ECHL level. He offers a different dynamic that we don’t have on our team. There’s not many of his type in the ECHL. We’re really excited to have a player of his stature in our lineup.”
