BRAMPTON, ONTARIO – The Brampton Beast, ECHL affiliate of the St. John’s IceCaps and Montreal Canadiens, announce today that the club has signed reliable, hard-hitting defenseman Mike Folkes to a contract ahead of the 2016-17 ECHL season.
Folkes, 27, returns home to Ontario after completing a season abroad with the Manchester Storm in the Elite Ice Hockey League in the United Kingdom. The 6’1” Burlington, Ontario native served as the club’s assistant captain last season and suited up in 56 contests, scoring one goal and adding four assists for five points to accompany his rugged 85 penalty minutes.
No stranger to the ECHL, Folkes started his professional career with the Utah Grizzlies in the 2013-14 season. In his inaugural season with the Grizzlies, the 190-pound lefty played 44 games and picked up a goal, three helpers and 78 penalty minutes, all while maintaining a plus-two rating.
He continued with the Grizzlies throughout the 2014-15 campaign and picked up another six assists and 48 penalty minutes in 38 games played.
Prior to turning pro, Folkes turned his attention to university hockey. He started his university career in the NCAA with Ohio State University. He played the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons with the Buckeyes, playing in 35 games and recording three assists and 28 penalty minutes.
Folkes made the move to CIS hockey in the 2011-12 season and suited up for the Carleton Ravens. In 27 games played, he lit the lamp four times and added another four helpers.
His strong play and leadership earned him an ‘A’ on his sweater for the Ravens during the 2012-13 season, where he appeared in another 28 CIS contests where he assisted on six goals and earned 46 penalty minutes.
Even though Folkes’ hometown of Burlington, Ontario is just a short drive away from Brampton, he hasn’t played in the area in over ten years and he is excited to get the opportunity to play professional hockey so close to home.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to get up here and play at home in front of friends and family,” Folkes said. “I’m looking forward to getting back into the ECHL and making a run for that Kelly Cup.”
Beast Head Coach and Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Chaulk is excited to round out the Beast blue line with a hard-nosed competitor like Folkes.
“Mike is the kind of player who competes every night,” Chaulk said. “He is a solid two-way defender who takes pride in shutting down the opposition’s top lines.”
