Beast Get Four New Division Rivals as ECHL Shakes Up Alignment

07/11/2016 11:08 AM -

BRAMPTON, ONTARIO – On Monday, July 11, the ECHL announced new Divisional and Conference alignment and Playoff Format that will take effect for the upcoming 2016-17 ECHL season.

The Brampton Beast will remain in the North Division for the 2016-17 campaign but will see new division rivals to start the season.

Both the Eastern and Western Conferences will reduce the number of divisions from three to two. The Eastern Conference will now feature the North and South Divisions, while the Western Conference now contains the Central Division and the new Mountain Division.

Joining the Beast in the North Division will be previous division challengers, the Wheeling Nailers, as well as a group of four new division rivals, including the Adirondack Thunder, Elmira Jackals, Manchester Monarchs and Reading Royals.

The ECHL also announced a new playoff format to accompany the new divisional alignment. Four teams from each of the four divisions will now qualify for the Kelly Cup Playoffs, with both the first and second rounds being played within each division.

Beast President and General Manager Cary Kaplan is excited that Beast fans will have the opportunity to become more invested in the new rivalries that will bloom as a result of the new alignment.

“With the new divisional alignment and playoff format, it will be great for our fans to follow the division rivalries closely,” Kaplan said. “There are no easy games in the ECHL and the quality of hockey in the North Division is no exception.”

Previous North Division opponents, the Kalamazoo Wings and Toledo Walleye, will now join the Western Conference under the umbrella of the Central Division.

This shift in divisions will see a trio of teams change conferences. Former North Division foes, the Kalamazoo Wings and Toledo Walleye will move to the Western Conference, while the Cincinnati Cyclones will move to the Eastern Conference and play in the South Division.

The Beast will play a total of 32 games within the new North Division, including 11 games against the Wheeling Nailers, nine contests against the Elmira Jackals, six games against the Adirondack Thunder and three games each against the Manchester Monarchs and Reading Royals.
