Thrower’s Miraculous Third Period Tally Lifts Beast to Second Straight Win

03/23/2016 7:32 PM -

MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE - Luc-Olivier Blain record his second straight multi-point night and Nick McParland scored a goal for the second consecutive night as the Brampton Beast earned a hard-fought 4-2 victory over the Manchester Monarchs at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester on Wednesday night.

Dalton Thrower scored the game-winner for the Beast early in the third period and Jeff Brown added an empty-netter as the Beast pick up back-to-back road wins for the first time since late January.

Beast starting goaltender Jordan Ruby’s night started quickly as the Monarchs barrelled in on a breakaway in the opening minute of the contest but Ruby stood tall and made the save, plus a big stop on the rebound to keep the Monarchs off the board in the early going.

The Monarchs struck first near the end of the opening frame as Maxim Kitsyn parked himself in front of Beast starting goaltender Jordan Ruby and slammed home his own rebound for his 25th goal of the year with 2:26 remaining in the first.

The Beast emerged fully energized after the first intermission and took it to the Monarchs early in the second frame.

Nick McParland was in the right place at the right time as the Monarchs defenseman knocked down a puck that landed right on McParland’s stick. He sent a quick backhand shot on goal that beat Monarchs starter Doug Carr at 10:44. Tim Billingsley and Jeff Brown recorded assists on McParland’s goal, giving Billingsley an impressive five points in his last five games.

The Monarchs would get that one back and take the lead before the end of the second period as Kitsyn picked up his second goal of the night, entering the zone on a 3-on-1 and roofing a shot over the glove of Ruby at 11:33.

The Beast would get their revenge before the end of the frame as Blain settled a puck down in the left corner, walked toward the goal and sent a perfect shot into the top corner over the blocker of Carr with 6:01 remaining in the second period to tie the game 2-2.

Beast defenseman Zach McCullough took a penalty late in the second period, giving Manchester a lengthy power play to start the third period, but the Beast penalty killers were perfect and were able to kill the man advantage.

Shortly thereafter, the Beast took their first lead of the game as Dalton Thrower started the rush to the right of his goaltender, deked his way through the entire Monarchs team and roofed home his first goal of the year in spectacular fashion just 3:31 into the final frame.

The Monarchs had their chances late in the game but Jordan Ruby held his ground and weathered all eight shots he faced in the final period, including perhaps one of the most unbelievable saves a Beast goaltender has made all season. With Ruby on his stomach and seemingly down and out, the Monarchs forward attempted to lift the puck over the Beast goaltender but Ruby was able to lift his pad off the ice and kicked the puck out of harms way to maintain the Beast lead.

The Monarchs and the Beast battled hard throughout the remainder of the third period but the resilient Beast would not allow another goal. Jeff Brown picked up his second point of the night with an empty-net goal in the final minute of play, sending the Beast to their second straight victory.

Jordan Ruby was brilliant between the pipes and picked up his fourth win of the season with 30 saves. Doug Carr took the loss for Manchester and finished with 32 stops.

The Beast will now head to Elmira to face the Jackals on Friday, March 25. The club will return home on Sunday, March 27 to host the Toledo Walleye for the final time this season. Single game tickets are now available, starting at $16.25.
