Busy Day of Transactions Ahead of Weekend Games

BRAMPTON, ONTARIO – The Brampton Beast, ECHL affiliate of the St. John’s IceCaps and Montreal Canadiens, announce several transactions ahead this weekend’s games against the Toledo Walleye on Friday and the Greenville Swamp Rabbits on Sunday.


The Beast announce today that they have claimed forward Mike Hammond from the Cincinnati Cyclones.


The 26-year-old Hammond is in the midst of his first professional season and suited up for 26 games with the Cyclones, recording three goals and one assist with four penalty minutes.


Prior to turning pro, Hammond played four full seasons for Lakehead University where he was a point-per-game player, recording an impressive 48 goals and 82 assists for 130 points in just 111 Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) games.


The Victoria, British Columbia native earned numerous accolades for his strong university career. In his rookie year in 2011-12, he was named to the CIS (OUA West) All Rookie Team for his stellar rookie season in which he scored nine goals and chipped in with 18 assists in 28 games played.


In his final year of university in 2014-15, his hard work on the ice paid off as he was named to the CIS (OUA West) First All Star Team and was dubbed the league’s Most Sportsmanlike Player.


In a separate transaction, the Beast have acquired right-winger Colin Murray via a trade with the Kalamazoo Wings.


Murray, 26, hails from Oshawa, Ontario and has suited up for 33 games this season for the K-Wings, recording five goals and six assists.


This season is his second in the ECHL. He split the 2014-15 season between the K-Wings and the Evansville Icemen, playing in a total of 58 games, notching ten goals and eight assists with 34 penalty minutes.


Prior to turning pro, he played four full seasons in the NCAA with Castleton State College in Vermont, cracking the lineup for 85 games between the 2010-11 and 2013-14 seasons, recording 30 goals and 40 assists with 62 penalty minutes.


The Beast also announce a pair of callups to the American Hockey League as Beast captain and leading scorer Brandon Marino will rejoin the Utica Comets, while Mac Bennett will be returning to the St. John’s IceCaps.


Marino, 29, has been on fire since being reassigned to the Beast from Utica earlier in February. The Riverside, California native has suited up for six games with the Beast since his first stint in the AHL and recorded four goals and three assists for seven points.


In eight games with the AHL’s Comets this season, Marino recorded one goal and four penalty minutes.


Defenseman Mac Bennett will rejoin the IceCaps after suiting up for three games with the Beast. He recorded one assist. In 29 games with the IceCaps this season, Bennett recorded one goal and two assists and 28 penalty minutes.

Hammond and Murray are expected to be in the lineup this Friday, February 26 as the Beast head to Toledo to face the Walleye at 7:15 PM. The Beast will take Saturday off before returning to the Powerade Centre to host the Greenville Swamp Rabbits for the first time ever on Sunday, February 28 at 2:00 PM.
