BRAMPTON, ON – Scott Howes notched two goals and added an assist and Brandon Marino, Jeremie Blain and Angelo Miceli each had a two-point afternoon as the Brampton Beast picked up their first victory of the season in a big way, thumping the Toledo Walleye 5-2 at the Powerade Centre in Brampton on Sunday afternoon.
Eddie Pasquale picked up the win between the pipes for Brampton and looked sharp all game and kicked out 23 saves for his first ‘W’ with the Beast.
The Walleye struck first in the opening frame with Shane Berschbach beating Pasquale on a partial breakaway at 8:36.
The Beast roared back late in the second period as Miceli headed toward Walleye starter Jake Paterson on a breakaway. He was pulled down on the play but still managed to flip the puck through the goaltender before knocking the net off its pegs. After some deliberation by the officials, the goal stood, giving Miceli his second of the year at 16:33.
The celebration was short lived as Berschbach’s second of the game just over two minutes later gave Toledo the 2-1 lead.
Chris Auger tied the game less than a minute later with a perfectly placed shot on a partial breakaway over the glove of Paterson with just 46 remaining in the period.
The third period was all Beast as Brandon Marino gave the team its first lead of the game with a quick spin-and-fire goal at 10:13.
The Beast kept their foot on the gas in the third period and it paid off as Scott Howes found himself alone in front with the puck and flipped a perfect backhand shot over Paterson for a two-goal lead on the power play at 14:33.
Howes sealed the deal with an empty-netter at 18:45 to give the Beast their first win of the 2015-16 campaign.
Notes: The Beast penalty kill was perfect on the evening, killing off all seven Toledo power plays. The Beast were also 1-for-3 on the power play… The Beast outshot the Walleye 31-25, including a 15-7 edge in the third period… Molson Three Stars: 3) Scott Howes 2) Angelo Miceli 1) Brandon Marino.
