WICHITA, KS- Chad Painchaud extended his lead as the ECHL’s leading goal scorer in the month of February. The Brampton Beast’s leading scorer extended his magnificient scoring tear with a goal, giving him 14 in his last nine games, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a strong second period from the Thunder, as the Beast ultimately lost by a final score of 4-1.
Trevor Cann stood on his head, making 34 saves, including 20 in the second period, to keep the Beast in the game. Justin Donati added an assist on Painchaud’s goal, extending his points streak to five games while David Ling also added an assist, giving him four in the past two games.
The first period saw a lot of fast-paced back and forth hockey between the two teams. The familiar foes played very sound defensively, with the Beast only giving up 10 shots on goal while firing eight themselves. At the 8:06 mark of the stanza, the Thunder struck first, when the Beast misplayed the puck at their blueline and Wichita transitioned into a quick 2-on-1. Ian Duval was the recipient of a good pass and fired a shot past Trevor Cann for a 1-0 lead. Just like they have during their surge of strong play as of late, the Beast had a rapid response. Just over five minutes later, Justin Donati created a turnover in the Thunder zone. He found leading scorer Chad Painchaud in the slot, and he made no mistake, firing home his 23rd goal of the year to tie the game at 1-1 heading into the second period.
The ice started tipping in favour of Wichita in the second period. Despite being heavily outshot, the Beast held back the Thunder attack through out the first 10 minutes of play, actually getting the best chance themselves when Jason Pitton was stopped point-blank on a break away. At 15:08 of the frame, Trevor Cann turned the puck over behind the Beast goal and scrambled back to make two terrific saves, before Danick Gauthier finally beat the Beast goalie to put the Thunder up 2-1.
Wichita began the third period on the power play after Matt McCready took a boarding penalty with a second left in the second period. After working the puck around the Beast zone, the puck made its way to Kirill Tulupov at the point and he fired a slap shot past Cann for a two-goal advantage. Wichita added an empty net goal late in the period to seal the victory.
