BRAMPTON, ON - The Brampton Beast put together one of their most dominating performances of the season Monday morning in front of the first sell-out crowd in Beast franchise history. With 5,020 fresh new faces in the stands for the Beast's School Day promotion, the boys on the ice gave the crowd plenty to cheer about en route to a 5-2 victory for the team's 50th win since its inception.
The Brampton Beast have been a franchise dedicated to giving back to the community since they first began operations, receiving the CHL Community Relations Franchise of the Year award during the 2013-14 season for their efforts. It was a tradition the home team was proud to carry on, with help from the ECHL and Quad City Mallards, as the Beast changed the start time of their game from 7 p.m. to an 11 a.m. to accommodate the thousands of Peel District school children in attendance with every school ticket purchased by a corporate sponsor.
With an electric energy in the building well before puck drop, the fans in attendance were treated to an absolutely amazing pre-game show from MC Miguel Martinez who helped orchestrate multiple activities that were in sync with the Beast’s theme of ‘Healthy Body Healthy Mind.’ The kids were also given thunder sticks as well as fun and interactive programs that promoted healthy food options and activities to promote the message.
On the ice Trevor Cann made 33 saves for his tenth win of the season, while Chad Painchaud added a hat trick, his third in his last seven games, to seal the win for the Beast. Justin Donati scored a goal and three assists while David Ling chipped in three helpers of his own in a huge win for the home team.
The Beast got off to a superb start just 34 seconds into the game. After a face off win off the initial draw, the Beast controlled play in the Mallards zone for an extended period of time until the biscuit made its way back to the point onto the stick of captain Cal Wild. Wild took a point shot on the ice that was tipped in front by Mike MacIsaac for a bar down goal, his eighth of the year and fifth against the Mallards. The goal sent the crowd into frenzy and it remained that way until the five-minute mark of the period, where with the Beast pressing on the power play, Justin Fox finished a short handed goal to tie the score at one. With less than three minutes left in the period, the Mallards once again broke into the Beast zone, this time with Logan Nelson scoring for a 2-1 Mallards lead heading into the second period.
The second period felt very reminiscent to last night’s contest, but with the tables turned in the Beast’s favour. Chad Painchaud started the scoring with his 20th goal of the season on a terrific display of hand-eye coordination. Mathew Maione took a point shot that landed on the stick of Painchaud, who batted the puck into the air to himself, and then with a second swing of the stick, hit it into the back of the net to tie the game at two. At the 6:32 mark of the second period, after David Ling held the puck in the Mallards zone for a good chunk of time, he sent a backhand pass into the slot that found Painchaud, who potted his second of the game and 21st of the season for a 3-2 Beast lead. The Beast won the ensuing face off, and Justin Donati took the puck into the Mallards zone on a 1-on-3. After a couple of terrific moves, he wired a wrist shot that went bar down for a 4-2 Beast lead.
Six minutes into the third period, Chad Painchaud kept up his torrid scoring pace, potting his third goal of the game for his third hat trick of the season, pushing the Beast lead to 5-2.
After the game the Beast travel to Wichita to play the Thunder on Friday, February 27, and then go to Allen for a single game against the Americans before making their way back to the Powerade Centre for a three-game set against the Wichita Thunder.
