02/10/2015 11:27 PM -

RAPID CITY, SD - The Brampton Beast charged at the Rapid City Rush right of their gate with relentless energy, but it wasn’t enough as the Beast ultimately fell to the Rush by a final score of 6-3.

Chad Painchaud led the way for the Beast with two goals on eight shots, with David Ling adding assists on both goals. Jason Pitton tallied his first goal in the month of February while Grant Rollheiser made 21 saves in a losing effort.

The first period was exactly what the doctor ordered for the Beast. Despite travelling almost 1900 kilometres to get to Rapid City, the Beast came out with a tenacity that hasn’t been since the beginning of their losing skid. They outworked the Rush and dominated the play through out the frame, outshooting Rapid City by a margin of 9-3. Aside from a shot that rang off the cross bar, the Rush never had a quality scoring chance, meanwhile, the Beast capitalized on one of theirs. Just under ten minutes into the period, the Rush turned the puck over near the hash marks and the Beast transitioned into a mini 3-on-0 break. All three players touched the puck on the play, with Chad Painchaud finishing it off for his 10th goal of the season.

The Beast got away from their sturdy defence during a second period that became a track meet in a hurry. Just under five minutes into the frame, Rapid City tied the game on a bang bang play that ended with Patrick Cullen ripping a shot past Grant Rollheiser to make it 1-1. Twenty-three seconds later, the Beast came roaring down the ice on a 3-on-2 with the puck landing on the stick of Jason Pitton. The Beast’s leading goal scorer potted his 17th of the year, increasing his team lead and giving the Beast the advantage once again.

Less than two minutes after that, the Rush capitalized on a quick transition, and defenceman Mathieu Brisebois finished off the play for his seventh goal of the season. After a couple of minutes of rough play, a fight and both teams finishing their checks, Rapid City gave themselves their first lead of the game when Johan Ryd cashed in on his first short handed goal of the season. Less than a minute after that, Chad Painchaud came down the ice and potted his second of the game to once again knot the score at three. Finally, towards the end of the period, the Rush’s Daniel Barczuk added a goal to cap off the exciting period, putting Rapid City up 4-3 heading into the third.

The third period saw the game tilt in favour of the Rush. Cody Ferriero scored his eleventh goal of the year for the Rush to push the lead to 5-3 before frustrations started to boil over for the Beast. Dalton Thrower got into a tussle with local tough guy Kevin Harvey towards the end of the period after taking multiple hits in the same shift. Johan Ryd added an empty netter with 48 seconds left to seal the win for the Rush.

The Beast return home on Monday February 16, to take on the Tulsa Oilers at the Powerade Centre on Mascot Family Day where fans and families get to meet Boomer’s friends!
