MOLINE, IL - Playing the third game in three consecutive nights, the Beast fought valiantly despite battling weary road legs, but would end up falling 3-1 to the Quad City Mallards in front of a near sellout crowd at the iWireless Center.
The first period was a back-and-forth defensive battle between both teams. The Beast came out of the gates dominating possession of the puck for the second straight night, but were unable to convert on two power play opportunities early on.
With under a minute remaining in the period, a furious puck battle along the corner boards in the Beast zone saw Kevin Baker collect the puck out of the swarm of bodies and skate through the slot firing a wrister over the shoulder of Beast netminder Trevor Cann for his 7th goal of the season. The late goal, scored with only 15.8 seconds left in the period, gave the Mallards a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The shot total after 20 minutes was 12-6 in favour of Quad City, although the Beast defense did an admirable job limiting the Mallards to mostly low percentage shots from outside the hash marks. Aside from a minor defensive lapse late in the frame, the Beast played a very strong defensive period with Cann looking strong behind his blue liners.
The second period would see the pace of the game pick up considerably, evidenced by the 16-10 shot count in favour of the Mallards. The Beast once again found themselves on the man-advantage and had an excellent opportunity to even the scoring when Chad Painchaud made a perfect pass to Bobby Hughes in the slot, but Hughes fanned on the one-timer attempt.
It remained a one-goal game until the 11:12 mark of the second period, when Mallards forward Todd Fiddler skated the puck into the slot and wired a snapshot towards Cann to give the home team a 2-0 lead.
At the other end of the ice, Mallards goaltender Evan Mosher stole the show for Quad City. He made a number of quality saves that left the home crowd at the iWireless Center in awe; none bigger than the shoulder save made on Steven Tarasuk in the low slot. Tarasuk, who missed the prior 2 games on the road trip due to a concussion, was playing on the wing instead of his usual position on the blue line due to the injury to Stephon Thorne.
The third period saw an initial Mathew Maione pointshot stopped by Mosher, while Mike MacIsaac found the loose puck in front through a swarm of bodies and net his 7th goal of the season, trimming the deficit to 2-1. Trevor Cann kept the Beast in the hunt making an incredible post-to-post stick save on Mallards forward Jeff Lee while the Beast were playing shorthanded.
For the second night in a row, a third period Riley Austin penalty would set up the opposing team with a powerplay and a prime opportunity to add some insurance to their lead. At the 12:48 mark of the third period, Mallards forward Matt Duffy would fire a pointshot with heavy traffic in front of the net and beat Cann for his 7th marker of the season and extend the Mallards lead to 3-1, effectively putting this game out of reach.
