Beast Sign Defenseman Tanner Burton

The Brampton Beast announced today the signing of 26-year-old defenseman Tanner Burton.

Burton joins the Beast after spending 10 games this season with the Louisiana IceGators of the SPHL, where he scored 3 goals and 3 assists to go along with 8 PIM and a +6 rating. The 6’0”, 185-pound defenseman of Sault Ste Marie, Ontario spent 7 games with the IceGators last season after a four-year tenure with Marian University (NCAA III).

"I’m really excited to have my debut in the ECHL. It definitely a great opportunity to further my pro career and help the Beast move up in the standings," said Burton this morning. "I plan to contribute defensively and move the puck up to the forwards to get the game going.”

Prior to heading south of the border for college, Burton spent three seasons with the Blind River Beavers of the NOJHL, where he recorded 75 points (20 G, 55 A) in 137 games and was awarded Most Improved, Team Unsung Hero, and Team MVP during his time with the club. Burton would go on to have a career year in the GMHL the following season (2009-10), where he posted 14 goals and 33 assists for 47 total points and 58 penalty minutes in 40 games (1.18 points per game), in addition to being named the Avalanche’s Best Defenseman and Team MVP.

"I haven’t played in Canada for a few years now," said Burton. "I’m happy to be closer to home, which gives my family and friends an opportunity to see me play.”

The newest addition to the Brampton squad is expected to make his Beast debut this Wednesday.

The Beast also announced the release of defenseman Andrew Darrigo. Darrigo was a fan favorite during his tenure in Brampton, and recorded 4 assists and 150 penalty minutes in 65 games over the past two seasons.

"It's tough to lose Andrew," said Brampton Beast General Manager Cary Kaplan. "He has been a key part of our team and an unbelievable Beast ambassador off the ice and in the community. We hope a new environment for Andrew gives him an opportunity for more ice time and to be a major contributor".

The Beast are back in action tomorrow, December 17 when the Beast take on the Quad City Mallards at 8:05 PM EST. Catch the game live on ECHL.tv or listen free at 4cornersradio.ca.
