BRAMPTON, ON – The Brampton Beast announced today the signing of 23-year-old defenseman Riley Austin.
Austin played four years of Division I NCAA hockey with St Lawrence University in upstate New York, where he tallied 6 goals and 13 assists to go along with 108 penalty minutes in 112 games. The shutdown defenseman was awarded the Terry Slater Perseverance Award along with teammate Matt Weninger in his senior season.
Prior to heading south of the border to play NCAA hockey, Austin spent parts of three seasons with the Lindsay Muskies of the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League, his last two as a full-time player. In his final season of junior hockey, Austin put up 11 goals and 31 assists for a total of 42 points in 49 games to lead his team in scoring amongst defensemen by 23 points. Austin also finished first on the muskies that season in PIM with 115.
“I’m really excited just to get an opportunity to prove myself and that I can play in this league,” said Austin following a team practice in Brampton on Thursday morning. “I’m excited and can’t wait to get it going tomorrow. I’m going to be the guy who blocks shots, boxes guys out in front of the net, gets pucks on net and hopefully help the boys win.”
Austin will be in action this weekend as the Beast welcome the Wichita Thunder to the Powerade Centre for Free Pizza Day courtesy of Pizza Pizza this Friday December 5th at 7:30 PM. Game two of the back-to-back doubleheader is slated for Saturday at 2:00 PM and will be Free Hot Dog day sponsored by Maple Lodge Farms. Finally, the Beast will wrap up their three-game homsetand when they take on the Wheeling Nailers for the first time ever on Sunday at 2:00 PM, which will also be Canadian Tire’s second annual Teddy Bear Toss at the Powerade Centre.
