Jacksonville Bests Beast on School Day

11/08/2017 12:52 PM -

BRAMPTON, ONTARIO – It was the first game in history between the Brampton Beast and the Jacksonville Icemen, the newest ECHL franchise. The Beast were unable to solve Icemen goaltender Jamie Phillips and fell to the tune of 5-0 at the Powerade Centre on Wednesday afternoon.

The Beast were the aggressors in the first period in part due to the energy that they gained from a sellout crowd full of school kids cheering on their every move.

Stefan Fournier returned to the lineup and made his presence felt immediately by getting into a spirited tilt two minutes into the contest.

With about five minutes remaining in the first period, Jacksonville was able to covert on a tip off the rush with Jan Kostalek redirecting the puck under the arm of Beast starting goaltender Andrew D’Agostini at 13:54.

The Beast would head to the locker room down 1-0 but would have the edge in shots by a 14-9 count.

It was an even second period with both clubs having a couple of great chances but neither being able to find the back of the net.  Both D’Agostini and Icemen netminder Jamie Phillips made some clutch saves as the time began to tick down.

Jacksonville went on the penalty kill late in the second. It was a chance for the Beast to pull themselves into the game.

Instead, Jacksonville’s Garret Hunt stepped out of the box and was sent in on a breakaway where he made no mistake and put a shot five hole through the legs of D’Agostini to make it 2-0 for the Icemen at 17:20.

Brampton headed into the second intermission down 2-0 but were up in shots by a 26-17 margin.

The Icemen were the more aggressive of the two teams in the third and were able to add to their lead with another goal at the 2:08 mark of the third. Bobby Macintyre would receive credit.

Emerson Clark and Cameron Crtichlow also added third period tallies at 13:23 and 15:13 respectively.

Phillips was able to weather any and all pressure thrown his way as the Icemen picked up their first win in ECHL history.

Notes: Molson Three Stars 3) D’Agostini (BRA) 2) Hunt (JAX) 1) Phillips (JAX) Both teams finished the game without a power play goal despite getting six opportunities each. The next home game is Friday, November 10th at 7:15 PM where the Beast will welcome to Norfolk Admirals to the Powerade Centre.
