Top 10 Moments of the 2016-17 Season - #5 – The Beast Get #HookedOnReading

In late January, 2017, the Brampton Beast teamed up with longstanding Brampton manufacturing business Velcro Canada Inc. to present a unique school program that made a significant impact in the community for young students across Peel Region.

The #HookedOnReading Challenge was established to get Peel Region students to get enthusiastic about reading and to raise awareness about the importance of taking the time to read books.

Students were encouraged to read two books outside of the regular school curriculum and were rewarded by Velcro Companies with tickets to the Brampton Beast’s game against the Florida Everblades on Sunday, February 26 at the Powerade Centre.

In addition to the students having an opportunity to earn Beast tickets, they got regular class visits from Brampton Beast players, who took time to read to the students, and talk about the importance of education, nutrition and even a little hockey talk, all throughout the six week program leading up to the big game.

A massive crowd of 4,221 fans, largely comprised of successful #HookedOnReading participants, packed the Powerade Centre on February 26 and they were mightily rewarded for their page-turning efforts.

While the conference-leading Florida Everblades presented a great challenge, the Beast, fuelled by a large crowd of enthusiastic students, got the best of the visitors.

Chris Auger opened the scoring with a jaw-dropping spin-o-rama goal late in the second period and David Pacan and David Vallorani added insurance tallies in the third period to lift the Beast to a massive 3-0 win.

Goaltender Zach Fucale made sure the fans in attendance went home happy as he amassed an impressive 42-save shutout.

To commemorate the #5 Moment of the 2016-17 season, the Beast will be auctioning off a 2015-16 Christian Weidauer Game-Worn Jersey. Not only did Weidauer wear this jersey on the ice during his first season in the ECHL, he wore this exact jersey while reading to local school children during the #HookedOnReading program.

The auction is now LIVE. To place your bids, please visit the Beast’s official eBay page here: The auction will run for seven days starting on July 4, 2017.
