MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE - In the final minutes of play in Game Six of the North Division Finals, Brampton Beast goaltender Zach Fucale made the save of the series, throwing out the glove hand to steal away a sure goal to help the Beast stay alive and come away with a crucial 2-1 victory over the Manchester Monarchs at SNHU Arena in Manchester on Wednesday night.
The save was one of 26 that the Laval, Quebec native made on the night as he earned First Star honours for his heroic performance in a do-or-die Game Five.
Reggie Traccitto scored the game-winner near the midway point of the third period and David Ling scored his first goal of the postseason to help force the series back to the Powerade Centre in Brampton for Game Six.
The Beast were the first to find the back of the net in the opening period. It all started with a hard shot off the stick of Brandon Marino. Monarchs starter Sam Brittain made the initial save and thought he was safe when he directed the rebound into the corner. David Ling had other plans as he sent a perfect shot on goal from the corner and beat the goaltender for his first goal of the postseason from Marino and Connor Crisp at 9:38.
The Beast were firing pucks on goal from everywhere in the opening period and outshot the Monarchs 11-8 after 20 minutes.
The Beast fought hard and maintained their lead until late in the second period when Daniel Doremus got his stick on a shot from David Kolomatis for a Monarchs power play goal at 15:21.
The Beast’s onslaught of shots continued throughout the second period as they once again outshot Manchester in the period, this time by a 20-10 margin for a 31-18 edge after two periods.
The Beast found themselves in penalty trouble in the third period, taking three separate minor penalties, but the penalty killers stood tall and prevented any Grade A chances from reaching their goal.
With the Beast enjoying a power play opportunity in the middle of the third period, Reggie Traccitto parked himself on top of the left wing circle and one-timed a pass from Jordan Henry. The shot exploded off his stick and whooshed by Brittain short side for a massive power play goal ay 9:35.
In the final two minutes of play, the Beast were assessed a penalty and were to be shorthanded for the remainder of the game. The Monarchs pulled Brittain in favour of a 6-on-4 advantage but Fucale made several timely saves and the Beast defensemen were quick to clear the puck out of their zone to seal a big victory for Brampton.
NOTES: Molson Three Stars: 3) Daniel Doremus (MAN). 2) Reggie Traccitto (BRM) 1) Zach Fucale (BRM). The Beast finished the game 2-for-3 on the power play and 5-for-6 on the penalty kill.
